Persephone in the Late Anthropocene: an opera

    The experimental opera "Persephone in the Late Anthropocene," co-created by composer Denis Nye and librettist Megan Grumbling for Hinge/Works, vaults an ancient myth into the age of climate crisis. The opera premiered at SPACE Gallery in 2016, in Portland, Maine. This all-instrumental recording of Nye's post-Romantic score was recorded in 2020 with the support of the Maine Arts Commission, at Acadia Recording Co., in Portland.

about

Nye's score, a post-Romantic chamber work for oboe, violin, viola, and cello, is informed by Richard Wagner's chordal depth and Elliot Carter's fragmented landscapes, and is filtered through a delay to evoke the disjunction and crisis – as well as the beauty – of our modern world. This new recording was produced and released in 2020 as companion to the launch of Grumbling's expanded libretto as a poetry volume, "Persephone in the Late Anthropocene," from Acre Books.

This all-instrumental recording of Nye's score features
Sam Schuth on violin, Leigh-Ashley Milne on viola, Volkhard Lindner on cello, and Benjamin Meiklejohn on oboe, under the musical direction of Aaron Pettengill. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered in late summer of 2020 at Acadia Recording Co., in Portland, Maine.
